Contra NES Beginner Guide: Controls, Weapons, and the 30-Lives Code
Learn the North American NES version of Contra, including movement, weapon priorities, stage survival, two-player habits, and the classic 30-lives code.

What this guide helps you do
- How aiming, jumping, and prone movement work
- Which weapon pickups are easiest for a first clear
- The version-specific 30-lives code
Build the control habits first
Contra expects you to move and aim at the same time. The D-pad runs, crouches, and aims in eight directions; A jumps and B fires. The browser emulator may map those buttons to different keyboard keys, so check its control overlay before the first run.
Practice jumping while holding a direction, firing upward before an enemy reaches your height, and dropping prone under horizontal bullets. A short controlled jump is usually safer than holding the button for maximum height.
- Enter a new screen while already aiming toward the most likely enemy lane.
- Use prone movement when a projectile passes at chest height, but do not stay still after it clears.
- In the behind-the-player base stages, move between lanes after enemy shots commit to your old position.
Choose consistency over risky upgrades
Flying capsules and marked enemies drop weapon upgrades. Spread is the most forgiving beginner weapon because it covers multiple angles. Machine Gun increases firing speed, while Laser delivers heavy straight-line damage but requires more deliberate timing.
A weapon only helps while you are alive. Do not jump into a pit or enemy pattern to collect a capsule, and stop firing for a moment if grabbing a new icon would replace a weapon you already control well.
- Keep Spread when the stage attacks from several heights.
- Save Barrier invincibility for forward progress instead of standing still to farm enemies.
- Against bosses, find a repeatable dodge route before trying to maximize damage.
Turn each lost life into route knowledge
Contra uses fixed enemy entrances and stage hazards, so repeated attempts are part of learning. Watch where the first bullet appears, which platform creates a blind jump, and where a turret becomes active. On the next life, solve that exact problem instead of rushing back to the same point.
Two-player mode adds firepower but also forces both players to share the screen. Move in the same general direction, call out dangerous jumps, and let the player with the stronger weapon take the safer route through tight sections.
- Prioritize staying alive over collecting score items.
- Destroy fixed guns and enemy spawn points before moving past them.
- During a boss cycle, dodge first and shoot only when the safe lane is clear.
Use the 30-lives code on the correct version
On the title screen of the North American NES release, enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, then Start. For a two-player game, use Select before Start after entering the sequence. A successful entry begins the game with 30 lives.
This code is version-specific. A Famicom, arcade, regional, or modified release may behave differently, so confirm the game version shown on the page before assuming the input failed.
Sources and version notes
This guide applies to North American NES release (1988). Browser key mappings can differ from the original controller, so confirm the emulator overlay before using button-specific instructions.
