Perfect Dark is a mission-based first-person shooter where you play as Joanna Dark, an agent for the Carrington Institute. Your primary objective in each level is to complete a series of mission goals, which can range from espionage and data theft to eliminating key targets and securing evidence. Moment-to-moment gameplay involves navigating complex environments, using a variety of futuristic weapons with secondary functions, and employing stealth to avoid or silently dispatch enemies. A useful beginner strategy is to frequently use the laptop gun, which can be deployed as a sentry turret to cover your flank, and to master the combat knife for silent takedowns. In the early stages of a mission, focus on reconnaissance, learning guard patrol routes, and locating key items. As you progress, the challenge intensifies with more alert enemies and complex objectives, requiring careful management of your limited health and ammunition. During tense moments, such as firefights or escort sequences, prioritize using cover and the game's aiming system to land precise headshots, and utilize gadgets like the cloaking device to create opportunities for escape or repositioning.
