In Gradius III, you control the Vic Viper spacecraft moving rightward through horizontally scrolling levels. Your primary objective is to survive each stage while destroying enemy ships and structures. You start with a basic pea shooter, but by collecting power capsules from destroyed orange carriers, you can build up your arsenal through the iconic power-up bar at the bottom of the screen. The bar cycles through options like Speed Up, Missile, Double Shot, Laser, Option (drones that mirror your shots), and Shield. Strategic power-up selection is crucial - many players prioritize getting multiple Options early as they dramatically increase firepower. Each stage features distinct environmental hazards and massive boss battles at the end. The game is known for its challenging difficulty, requiring precise dodging and pattern recognition, especially during the infamous high-speed sections and maze-like stages.
